Background of the Study
Leadership style plays a critical role in determining the success of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The way business leaders manage their teams, make decisions, and inspire others can have a profound impact on business performance, particularly in competitive environments like Plateau State, which has a growing SME sector. Different leadership styles—such as autocratic, democratic, transformational, and laissez-faire—affect the organizational culture, employee morale, innovation, and ultimately, the business’s financial outcomes (Okoro & Bature, 2023).

In Plateau State, SMEs are pivotal to the economy, yet many struggle with leadership challenges that impede their growth and competitiveness. This study will explore the various leadership styles adopted by SME owners in Plateau State and evaluate how these styles influence the performance and sustainability of their businesses.

Statement of the Problem
While effective leadership is essential for small business success, many SME leaders in Plateau State may not fully understand how their leadership style impacts organizational performance. A misalignment between leadership style and business needs could result in reduced employee productivity, poor decision-making, and stagnation. This study aims to examine the effect of leadership styles on small business performance in Plateau State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the different leadership styles adopted by SME owners in Plateau State.
  2. To examine the relationship between leadership styles and small business performance in Plateau State.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving leadership practices in SMEs to enhance business performance.

Research Questions

  1. What leadership styles are commonly adopted by SME owners in Plateau State?
  2. How do different leadership styles affect the performance of small businesses in Plateau State?
  3. What leadership strategies can SMEs in Plateau State adopt to improve business performance?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H0: Leadership style does not significantly affect the performance of small businesses in Plateau State.
  2. H0: There is no significant relationship between the leadership style and employee productivity in Plateau State SMEs.
  3. H0: Transformational leadership style does not significantly enhance business performance in Plateau State SMEs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on small and medium-sized enterprises in Plateau State, particularly on how leadership style affects their performance. Limitations include the challenge of measuring leadership style objectively and obtaining comprehensive data from SMEs that may be reluctant to disclose performance metrics.

Definitions of Terms
